The moods of his films resemble an atmosphere between the dream and trauma. Brehm treats the dream as a source of strategies for association, similar to the secondary process to which according to Freud all the workings of the unconscious are subject. Die

In 2002, the Austrian Film Museum devoted a comprehensive retrospective to the works of the Austrian artist and filmmaker Dietmar Brehm, accompanying the show with a richly illustrated publication. In the meantime, Brehm has been anything but inactive. Aside from several outstanding films involving subjects that were new to him (the "Naturalistic Films") and the masterpiece Halcion (2007) which premiered at documenta 12, Brehm intensified his work with a medium which he had hitherto only employed "in secret": video and digital image processing.

Austrian filmmaker Dietmar Brehm says that he makes horror films, and while the six short films comprising Black Garden, made between 1987 and 1999, have only the barest hint of narrative, they share with the genre an eye for sexual perversity and the use of synthetic cutting to link the observer with the observed, even when they're in different locales. In one film, a man hidden behind dark glasses is intercut with close-ups of sex organs and intercourse, suggesting both a watcher of horrors and the master manipulator of the mad-doctor movie. In another, a nude, bound woman is intercut with a surgical operation; the two shots don't seem to occupy the same physical space, but connecting them in this way is enough to make the skin crawl. At times Black Garden has the orgy-in-a-broom-closet feel of Jack Smith's Flaming Creatures, though the orientation here is appropriately aggressive: interposing a snake eating a rodent with a woman giving a blow job may not be totally misogynist, but it's not exactly romantic either. 108 min.

Filmmaker Dietmar Brehm, a specialist of unsettling moving images, rarely allows himself to be unsettled himself. With a certain amount of stoicism, he looks at the naked, ghostly human bodies from prehistoric times and the middle period of cinema; at the flickering of blood-red lightning and negative images of anonymous dancers; at a gigantic nervous fly, whose silhouette moves down a windowpane and into the picture; at a fragment of a sexploitation crime film in fast motion; at the gently moving waves on the surface of a lake. Brehm’s aural worlds are constructed so as to be as equally associative as the images they accompany: whirring synthetic music, pattering rain, soft crackling and subdued street noise, barking dogs, ringing telephones and the noise of an electronic alarm clock. Dietmar Brehm’s Praxis series comprises a number of films under construction: At present there are three parts which can be differentiated into 21 scenes; a fourth, according to Brehm, is currently in production, and a number of other sequels are planned. Some of the series’ segments, ranging from artificial ecstasy to cool contemplation, are video works, while others are radical transfers of 16mm film to digital film stock, which has enhanced the graphic, painterly aspects of Brehmesque cinema considerably. Some of his films were “redeemed” by the video transfer, as Brehm has noted—in an act of “chemical and electronic” unleashing. The idea of recycling is not foreign to artists like Brehm, w...

the “inexplicable perception of the image.” Having begun to work with photography and film in the 1970s, Brehm extended his practice to video in the early 1990s in order to reflect on different media strategies. His films are characterized by fuzzy extreme close-ups of moments that hint at fragments of things imagined. This focus on details transforms many of the images into signs of a pictorial language characterized by components derived from drawing. He semantically alters the images’ meaning, giving rise to an abstracted atmosphere based on his personal surroundings, be it in his apartment or his studio. Brehm manipulates conventional ways of seeing and thereby approaches a specific artistic reality. His filmic sequences frequently refer to social gatherings involving a variety of people in a homey atmosphere that can also take on a party-like or exuberant character. Brehm relates to the pop aesthetics of the period and to everyday situations, focusing on individuals and their psycho-social relations. His Super 8-format short films from the 1970s manifest iconic portraits of a generation inspired by punk and possessed of a sacrosanct attitude towards life. There are certain narrative elements that recur in his films to become serial in nature, inviting viewers to create their own stories according to the pictorial material at hand. Brehm’s collages of zoomed-in shots of ordinary moments and commonplace scenes give rise to uncanny moments of ubiquitous phenomena such as si...
